A clinical bowling effort, combined with an excellent performance in the field, gave Sri Lanka a 77-run win in the first ODI against Bangladesh on Wednesday (2nd July) at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Sri Lanka skipper Charith Asalanka struck another fine hundred amid a flurry of wickets, guiding the hosts to a total of 244 after electing to bat first.
Bangladesh lost Parvez Hossain early in the chase, with Kusal Mendis holding onto a good catch running back off the bowling of Asitha Fernando, reducing the visitors to 29 for 1.
Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto built a promising partnership, with the two left-handers scoring at a healthy rate. In the meantime, Tanzid brought up his fourth ODI fifty as Bangladesh raced towards the three-figure mark.
However, a brilliant throw by Milan Rathnayake from deep square leg provided the much-needed breakthrough, as Shanto was run out for 23. That opened the door for Sri Lanka. Wanindu Hasaranga struck with just his second delivery, trapping Litton Das LBW. He then struck again in the same over, with Janith Liyanage taking a superb catch at mid-off to dismiss the well-set Tanzid for 62.
From there, the hosts continued to take wickets regularly. Kamindu Mendis cleaned up Towhid Hridoy, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz fell to Hasaranga as his third victim. Kamindu returned in his next over to claim two more scalps, as Bangladesh collapsed from 99 for 1 to 105 for 8.
Jaker Ali and Tanvir Islam tied to resist, batting for 7.5 overs, but the reintroduction of Maheesh Theekshana brought the ninth wicket, with Tanvir caught behind. Jaker Ali scored his third ODI fifty, but could only delay Sri Lanka’s win, as Bangladesh were eventually bowled out for 167 in 35.5 overs.
Wanindu Hasaranga was the pick of the bowlers with outstanding figures of 4 for 10 in 7.5 overs, including two maidens. Kamindu Mendis also impressed, finishing with 3 for 19.
Earlier today, Bangladesh’s seamers struck early, reducing Sri Lanka to 29 for 3 in just 6.1 overs. The in-form Pathum Nissanka fell for an 8-ball duck, edging behind off Tanzim Hasan, while Nishan Madushka chopped one onto his stumps off Taskin Ahmed.
Kusal Mendis looked to counterattack, taking on the bowlers with a 14-run over off Tanzim and racing to 19 off just 12 deliveries. Kamindu Mendis, however, fell cheaply for a 4-ball duck—Taskin’s second scalp—chipping one straight to mid-off.
Kusal was then joined by captain Asalanka as the pair attempted to steady the innings. Asalanka found a few boundaries early to relieve the pressure, and the duo stitched together a 60-run stand for the fourth wicket before Kusal fell for 45, becoming Tanvir Islam’s maiden ODI wicket.
Asalanka went on to share another half-century partnership, this time with Janith Liyanage. The skipper brought up his half-century in the process. But just as the partnership was flourishing, Najmul Hossain Shanto was brought into the attack and struck immediately—removing Liyanage, who threw away his start.
The visitors continued to pick up wickets at regular intervals. Debutant Milan Rathnayake and Wanindu Hasaranga both got starts but were dismissed in the twenties, leaving Sri Lanka 8 down for 228. Asalanka, however, stood firm at one end and brought up his fifth ODI century—his second against Bangladesh.
Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 244 in 49.2 overs. Taskin Ahmed led the bowling attack with impressive figures of 4 for 47, including two maidens, while Tanzim Hasan chipped in with 3 for 46.
Earlier, Sri Lanka made one change from their previous ODI, handing a debut to seam-bowling all-rounder Milan Rathnayake. Bangladesh also had two debutants in the XI—opener Parvez Hossain Emon and left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam.
