The first-round matches of the Mercantile Hockey League A & B division matches were worked out at the Astro Turf earlier this week, kicking off the league for 2018.

In the ‘A’ division draw, Hatton National Bank took on MAS Holdings ‘A’ while Sampath Bank went up against Commercial Bank A.

In the ‘B’ Division segment Allianz Insurance took on Nation Trust Bank ‘B’ and Browns clashed against Commercial Bank ‘B’.

Hatton National Bank vs MAS Holdings ‘A’

Hatton National Bank schooled MAS by 5 goals to nothing. Leading 3-0 at half time with Danushka Fernando scoring in the 3rd minute, Rasika Wickramasinghe in the 10th minute and Damitha Bandara in the 22nd minute off a penalty corner, HNB was well ahead. Damitha Bandara scored the final two goals in the second half to earn himself a hat-trick.

Sampath Bank ‘A’ vs Commercial Bank ‘A’

Commercial Bank ‘A’ stood 7 goals tall against Sampath Bank ‘A’ in the second Division ‘A’ match. Milan Ariyawansa sounding the board in the 5th and 23rd minute to take a 2-0 lead by half time.

In the second half 3 goals in the 31st, 33rd and 41st minute which was a hat trick scored by Ashan Alles and followed by 2 more goals by Anju Hewage in the 51st and 53rd minute sealed the game for Commercial Bank.

Nations Trust Bank ‘B’ vs Allianz Insurance                                                         

In the first B Division game, Nation Trust Bank ‘B’ beat Allianz Insurance by 3 goals to 1 after scores were 1-1 at half time. It was Allianz who went into the lead with Lasantha Perera starting the scoring in the 04th minute. Minutes before going into lemons, Dennis Sirimanne equalized the score for NTB.

In the second half Dennis Sirimanne scored his second goal in the 41st minute and Kusal Senanayake’s third goal in 58th minute gave victory to NTB.

Commercial Bank ‘B’ vs Browns Group

In the second B Division game, Commercial Bank ‘B’ outclassed Browns by 12 goals to 2 with the scores at half time reading 5-1. However, it was Browns who went up the board first with Ruchira Ranga scoring their first in the 3rd minute.

Commercial Bank’s 12 goal wrath had 5 top notch goals in the first half. Bettering themselves, they went on to score 7 more goals in the latter half. Half a dozen goals to his name, Gihan was undoubtedly the top player in the match.

Two more goals from Marlon, two from Jaliya and another double by Elhena sealed the deal by a long shot for the bankers. The second goal for Browns came from the stick of Nadun Abeysuriya in the second half.
