Matthew Abeysinghe in seventh heaven

Matthew Abeysinghe took Sri Lanka to a new glorious achievement when he won the 400 meters individual medley making it seven gold medals to the tally breaking a 25 year old record set by Julian Bolling in the year 1991.

Abeysinghe sets a new high for the country in the South Asian Games breaking the record set by Julian Bolling who won five medals during the 1991 SAG games. Matthew achieved this when he won the 400 meters Individual Medley event clocking 04:40:47. This comes as his seventh gold medal along with his six other achievements over the past few days at the Guwahati Swimming pool complex.

He thus has complied 7 out of the 20 medals that the country has already as of today(10th) and along with his two silver medals and the single bronze medal, Abeysinghe has showered his country with 10 medals in total.

The swimmers have performed exceptionally well in the South Asian circuit along with the heavyweight India who put through a good fight till the end. Abeysinghe’s Gold medals from the individual events came from the 200m Individual Medley, 400m Individual Medley, 100m Freestyle, Freestyle 50m, Butterfly 100m & Freestyle 200m. The relay event in which Matthew Abeysinghe got the Gold honors were the Freestyle 4X100m along with his brother Kyle Abeysinghe, Cherantha De Silva and Shehan De Silva.

The two silver medals were from the 4X200m Freestyle and the 4X100 medley. The singular bronze medal that Abeysinghe won was in the 50m Backstroke making it a total of 10 valuable medals.
