The MAS Group asserted its supremacy in volleyball when its group companies won two of the four championships, were runners-up in two and emerged second runners-up in one of the finals at the 2015 Mercantile Volleyball Men’s and Women’s Tournament, organized by Mercantile Volleyball Association played at National Youth Council Maharagama on Sunday.

Brandix Intimate Apparel Ltd-Minuwangoda won the Super League men’s final defeating MAS Linea Aqua-Kapugoda, while Brandix Intimate Apparel Ltd-Minuwangoda took the Women’s Championship beating MAS Linea Aqua-Kapugoda in the finals.

Among the Group companies that won runners-up positions were Brandix Intimate Apparel – Minuwanoda in the Super League women’s final and MAS Linea Aqua-Kapugoda in the Men’s Championship.

Brandix Intimate Apparel-Polonnaruwa, MAS – Slimtex, SLT Human Capital Solution and Brandix Uknits – Merigama took third place in the Men’s Super League, the Women’s Super League and the Men’s and Women’s Championship respectively.

Seven out of eight teams which qualified for both Men’s and Women’s Grand Championship and Super League finals were from the apparel sector, thus showing their dominance in mercantile volleyball. 96 teams from island-wide mercantile firms took part in the preliminary round proving the popularity of the game in the private sector.

Personal awards were presented to the Best Setter, Best Attacker, Best Player and Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament at the Women’s Championship and the Men’s Super League. Ranga Fernando from MAS Intimate Apparel Minuwangoda won the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament award.
