Maris Stella and A. Ratnayake Central College Dominate 31st School Games

Rumeshika Ratnayake of St. Joseph’s BV Kegalle sealed the “Best sprinter of the Championship” award on her way to establishing two records at the 31st all Island Schools Championship which concluded in Diyagama yesterday.

The speedster established new meet records in both the Under 21 girls’ 100m and 200m event and amassed 1027 IAAF points for her performance in the 200m event. Meanwhile Pasindu Bhawantha of Weera Keppetipola CC won the award for the best thrower of the competition for his record breaking performance in the Under 17 boys’ Discus Throw, where he achieved a distance of 57.77m. The best jumper award went to High Jumper Roshan Ranathunga of Godakawela Maha Vidyalaya for his feat of 2.13m, which fell just short of the record set by Milan Dissanayake a few years ago.  

Maris Stella College Negombo continued their dominance in the schools’ athletic scene by winning the Boy’s overall championship with 163 points, with A. Ratnayake Central College, Walala (96 points) and St. Benedict’s College, Colombo (72 points) finishing second and third respectively.

In the girls’ championship A. Ratnayake Central College, Walala put in another dominant performance to finsh 1st overall with 194 points, with Sumsana BV Rathnapura (147 points) and St. Joseph’s BV Kegalle (141 points) finishing 2nd and 3rd.

The highlight of the competition was the number of new records that were established. All in all 29 records were broken, including a the Under 21 girls’ 200m record set by Damayanthi Darsha in 1994.
