The 16th edition of the LSR Colombo marathon is set to be flagged off at the Sports Ministry vicinity on the 02nd of October 2016 at 06.00am.

An event inaugurated by Lanka Sportreizen (LSR) in 1988 to fill the vacuum of a world acclaimed marathon in the Island, was first called the LSR International marathon and was held in the historic city of Galle with the participation of 28 foreign competitors and 328 local competitors.  In the coming years this event was held in Negombo, Kandy& Dambulla and became a prominent race in the marathon calendar globally.

In the year 2004 it was decided to hold the marathon in Colombo while renaming it as the “LSR Colombo Marathon” in line with the famous marathons named after cities such as London, New York, Hawaii and  Singapore to name a few. This annual event has now earned voting rights of Association for Marathons & Distance Races (AIMS), an honour only bestowed upon 56 races out of the 110 races held around the globe.

Last year the 15th edition of the event saw 6400 runners taking part in the event with over 200 overseas contestants representing 39 countries competing and over 700 officials manning the task of a smooth operation. The organizers are confident of exceeding the milestone of 7500 contestants this time around.
