The 13th clash of LPL 2022 took place between the two top ranked sides of the season so far, Jaffna Kings and Kandy Falcons. This is the second time these two teams are meeting and Jaffna Kings walked out with the win in the first game.
Falcons skipper Wanindu Hasaranga won the toss and elected to bat first as their usual opening pair Pathum Nissanka and Andre Fletcher came out to bat. Except for Fletcher’s 35 from 22, none of the top order batters could go big for them. When captain Hasaranga departed for 7 in the 14th over, Falcons were in deep trouble with a scoreline of 79 for 6.
But Fabian Allen and Ashen Bandara combined for the Falcons and managed to push their score over 100 before Bandara departed for a run a ball 24. Then the in-form Chamika Karunaratne joined with Allen and added 32 runs for the 8th wicket in 16 balls to go past 150. Allen who top scored for Falcons made 47 from 23 with 3 fours and 4 sixes.
Karunaratne finished the Falcons innings with a last ball six to take them to 160, a score which looked improbable at the 13th over mark to remain unbeaten on 18 off 9 with 2 sixes.
Dunith Wellalage impressed the most for Kings in the bowling front bowling one of the best spells of the season taking 2 wickets for 7 runs in his 4 overs. Wellalage bowled 2 overs in the powerplay giving away only 3 runs and then took 2 wickets in his 3rd over. James Fuller, Dilshan Madushanka and Waqar Salamkheil also took 2 wickets each.
Chasing 161, Kings didn’t have the best of starts as Rahamanullah Gurbaz and Dhananjaya de Silva departed early. But Avishka Fernando and Sadeera Samarawickrama constructed a 58 run stand for the 3rd wicket to add some stability to their batting order.
But after Fernando got dismissed for 33, other batters failed to deliver the goods as Kings were restricted to 99 for 6 in 14 overs. The settled batter Samarawickrama was also dismissed in the very next over after Falcons skipper Hasaranga took a return catch. Samarawickrama made 48 from 41.
At the end Kings could only score 150 after losing 9 wickets and Falcons registered a 10 run win to cement their spot at the top of the table. Carlos Brathwaite the leading wicket taker of the tournament further added to his tally with a superb spell of bowling taking 4 wickets for 18. Hasaranga also chipped in with 2 wickets for 21 runs.
