It is that time of the year when two Hockey powerhouses in the school’s arena make their way to the turf for the 13th Annual Ladies’ vs Bishop’s Hockey Encounter.
This year the encounter will be held on 14th of October at the Astro Turf Grounds in Colombo 2.00 pm onwards. The event will ‘stick-off’ with the Under 17 match followed by the main event which is the U 19 game.
Ladies’ College will be hosting the event this year and Mrs Ruwinka Jayathileke a past hockey captain of Ladies’ College will be the chief guest.
This friendly encounter has become embedded in tradition where even though rivalry is evident it has paved the way to strengthen the bond between the two schools. It also has a twelve year history and has been an interesting annual encounter since 2005.
Ladies’ College has been able to grab the championship on 7 occasions, whereas Bishop’s College has won the title on three occasions. In the year 2010 and 2014 both schools were declared joint championship.
Last year, the matches took place on the 22nd of October at the Astro Turf Grounds, where Bishop’s College went on to defeat Ladies’ College 3-0 in the U 17 category while the U19 category match ended as 1-all draw. The overall championship was taken home by Bishop’s College.
The Ladies’ U 19 team will be captained by Shani Ariyawansa and Heshanthi Munasinghe and Shanya Navaratne will be supporting as vice captains. Suhithri Paranamanage will lead the Ladies’ U 17 team while Shemiah Karunarathne and Tiyani Gunawardana are to be joint vice captains.
Bishop’s College Under 19 team will be captained by Heshani Herath is taking reigns of the Bishops U 19 squad with Ayndhie Alles as her deputy. Aanjali Mahikanda will lead the U 17 team of Bishop’s College team this year while Sauda Azmi and Sarah Daniel act as the vice captains.
Ladies’ College team will be coached by Mrs. Sunethra Rupasinghe while Bishop’s College is guided under Miss Dinesha Perera.
