The Sri Lankan batting legend, Kumar Sangakkara officially announced his retirement from Test career after the upcoming second Test against India in August.

Kumar Sangakkara held a media conference on Saturday after third day’s play to officially announce his retirement plans.

” I have decided to call it a day on my international career after the second Test of the Indian series. This was a commitment I made with the previous selection committee. Originally I had planned to retire after the World Cup from all forms of cricket but following a discussion, I gave my word that I will be available for these two series’.” Sangakkara said to the media.

Sangakkara retired from T20 cricket after the Sri Lanka’s triumph last year in Bangladesh while he gave up white-ball cricket after the World Cup in Australia/New Zealand.

” I would love to be choosing where I would be finishing but as a player it is not in my hands, I will have to play where ever it is. I have had the time of my life playing for Sri Lanka. It is the greatest honour for me. I’ll definitely miss playing for Sri Lanka. ” Sanga further said.

“My father, when I was at home with him a couple of years ago in Kandy, asked me: ‘Don’t you think it’s time you started thinking about retirement?’ I got a shock. I thought, ‘What are you trying to tell me? That I’m not good enough?’ But then speaking to my mind, it actually made some sense. It was back in 2012 or 2013 when he asked me that, and it struck home. I thought, ‘Maybe it was time I paid attention to what’s happening. Then when I had my back injury against India in October last year and I came back, it just kind of felt right. The voice in my head was there from maybe that July South Africa series when Mahela decided to retire. It was strange because I had decided before him to start writing a letter, when he called me and told me that he was retiring. I said, ‘Okay, that’s fine. We can’t have two people going at the same time.” Sanga went back the memory lane.
