St.Benedict’s College registered a 4-0 win to secure all three points against Kingswood College, in the Kotmale Chox Schools U19 Football Championship match at the St.Benedict’s College ground.

St.Benedict’s College held their shape and showed discipline throughout the game. Within the first 15 minutes they managed to score a magnificently worked goal, passing with ease to allow striker Abishek Fernando to shoot from outside the box in to the top left corner.

Abishek Fernando had two more chances within quick succession of his first chance, yet failed to find the goal.

Kingswood never looked like scoring in the first half, barely testing goalkeeper Ashen Sanjaya and rarely hit the target. Sanjaya however did have to show his acrobatics towards the end of the half when he saved a blistering shoot from H.K.C.Ishara.

Bens pushed forward from the moment they scored their opener. Trying to open gaps on the left and right. They picked up two yellow cards in the process; first for defender Nishan Deema then captain Malindu Nimantha both for mistimed challenges.

The second half started with a slower pace, yet within the opening few minutes Herain Dellel managed to double the hosts’ tally.

Kings brought on a fresh pair of legs in A.Zahid for midfielder Abdul Qadir. This temporally gave Kingswood an advantage and when they gained a corner they looked close to score form a diving header from Basith Ahamed but in the ensuing melee Sanjaya was injured, resulting in his substitution for Abugan Alexander.

Kingswood looked to have the edge at this point yet failed to capitalise. They created little chances and the crosses that managed to land in the box were defended skilfully.

This frustrated the visitors and they left to many gaps at the back for striker Dellel to easily slot home a third from open play. Raveen Dananjaya brilliantly headed a fourth from a well-worked free kick.

The end of the game was brought into disrepute as Kingswood College coach H.M.Rathnayakawas sent to the stands for repeated abuse.

He disputed that the third goal was off side several times and had to be sent away to calm the situation. In doing so Kingswood defenders H.M.B. Nishantha and S.J.Widanaarachchi were also booked for descent.
