Kingswood and Seethadevi Kandy District Hockey Champions

The Kandy District Hockey Championships organized by the Kandy District Hockey Association was held on the 2nd, 3rd and 6th of June at the Peradeniya University Grounds.

18 teams participated in this tournament where Kingswood College Kandy won the Boys’ title while Seethadevi Girls College came away with the Girls’ title.

Kingswood College made it to the finals with dominant performances against every opposition they faced, beating St. Anthony’s College 5-0, Vidyartha College 6-0 and Dharmaraja College 4-0 in first round matches and then beating Sumangala College 3-0 in semifinals.

Trinity College on the other hand beat Sumangala College 4-1(penalties)  and St. Sylvester’s College 2-0 in first round and overcame Vidyartha College 1-0 in a closely fought semifinal.

In the boys’ final, Kingswood mid-fielder Chandeepa Ananda scored the first 2 goals of the game in 12th and 16th minutes respectively. In the 18th minute Trinity Skipper Kasun Jayasinghe brought things back for Trinity with a goal. The first half ended 2-1 with Kingswood leading as a result of Ananda’s double strike. Early on in the 2nd half Kingswood received a penalty stroke and the Kingswood skipper and Sri Lanka Schools’ team player Ashen Hansaka made no mistake extending the lead to 3-1. A few minutes later, the Trinity skipper struck his 2nd goal to bring the Kingswood lead down to 1 once again. In the 38th minute Hansaka scored again as Kingswood went ahead by two goals. The scores remained at 4-2 when the final whistle was blown and Kingswood were crowned champions. Vidyartha College beat Sri Sumangala College 1-0 in the 3rd place playoff.

The Girls’ final were played between Seethadevi Girls’ College and St. Anthony’s Convent.

Seethadevi Girls College came into finals by beating Hemamali Girls’ College 4-0, Gothami Girls’ College 7-0, Pushpadana Girls’ College 4-0 in the 1st round and Swarnamali Girls’ College 7-0 in the semifinals.
St. Anthony’s Convent came to the finals by beating Samudradevi Girls’ College 2-0, Swarnamali Girls’ College 3-0, Kandy Girls’ High School 3-0, Mahamaya Girls’ College 4-0 in the 1st round and beat Hemamali Girls’ College 4-0 in semifinals.

The first half of the final ended goalless. The only goal of the final was scored by the Seethadevi striker Charuka Nishadhi from a short corner assisted by Bhashini Perera. Swarnamali Girls’ College beat Hemamali Girls’ College in the 3rd place playoff.
