Khaled Mahmud, the former Bangladesh skipper, suffered a stroke on Saturday (July 29) and was reportedly critical even after being admitted to a city hospital in the country capital, Dhaka. Cricbuzz has learnt that Mahmud underwent MRI scans at 10.30 AM on Monday (July 31), reports of which revealed nothing too serious. However, he is expected to be flown to Singapore at night for further treatment. The all-rounder, who celebrated his 46th birthday on Wednesday last week, is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of United Hospital in Gulshan, Dhaka. Mahmud, the Chairman of Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) Game Development Committee was supposed to attend an emergency general meeting of the board on Sunday but following his absence, the members enquired further only to find about his health condition.

Earlier, speaking to a Bangladesh newspaper, The Daily Star, the BCB media committee chairman Jalal Yunus had said: “The members of the BCB learnt of his condition after making enquiries into why he was absent from today’s [Sunday’s] board meeting. He was admitted to hospital yesterday morning and is currently in the ICU.

“He is in a semi-coma, but the CT scan has not revealed anything too serious,” he added. Yunus had also mentioned that Mahmud could be taken to Singapore for better treatment, if needed.

Mahmud, who is also a Board director and national team manager, represented Bangladesh in 12 Tests and 77 ODIs. He scored 991 runs while picking up 67 wickets in the limited-overs format. He was only the third Test captain for his country, having led them in nine games before going on to retire from international cricket in 2006.

Only a few days back, he had taken part in the second edition of the Walton Masters Cricket Carnival, a tournament that sees only the former star cricketers participate in. Otherwise, since his international retirement, Mahmud has been into coaching and administrative roles.
