Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene is set to join the national team as a consultant for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Speaking at a media briefing held today in Colombo, SLC CEO Ashley de Silva confirmed that former skipper Jayawardene will work as a consultant with the national team during the T20 World Cup.

He said that the national team is set to leave the island for the World Cup on 02nd October while Jayawardene will join the Sri Lankan contingent in Australia by 06th October.

SLC President Shammi Silva who was also present at the occasion praised the contribution made by former skipper Jayawardene for the Sri Lanka team’s Asia Cup triumph.

“Jayawardene played a big part in the Sri Lanka team’s victorious Asia Cup campaign. He was involved in setting up strategies, selection and many more aspects. Jayawardene’s involvement is one of the main reasons for the national team’s progress” Silva said.

Jayawardene worked as the consultant coach of the national team in the last year’s T20 World Cup held in the United Arab Emirates where Sri Lanka managed to get into Super 12s but failed to make Semis as they lost three out of five Super 12 matches.

Sri Lanka will play Zimbabwe and Ireland in their warm-up games for the T20 World Cup before taking on Namibia in the opening match of the tournament on 16th October. ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be played from 16th October to 13th November in Australia.
