Two of Sri Lanka’s experienced rugby referees, Ishanka Abeykoon and Gihan Yatawara, have been selected to officiate at the Borneo Rugby 7s Tournament, which will be held from 19th to 20th April 2025 at the Eagles Rugby Club in Sandakan, Malaysia.
The Borneo Rugby 7s is a significant fixture in the global rugby calendar, attracting several high-calibre sevens teams, including national sides, renowned clubs, and development squads from across Asia and the Pacific.

In recent times, Sri Lankan referees have been increasingly invited to officiate at international tournaments. This encouraging trend is a testament to the efforts of the Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Football Referees (SLSRFR) and the impact of referee training programs conducted by both local and international educators. These initiatives have clearly contributed to enhancing the quality of officiating and raising the overall standards of local referees.
