Young sensation Shelinda Jansen made her final year count as she sprinted to Gold in the Under 20 200m race on the opening day of the International Schools Athletics Championship 2020. The three-day event commenced today at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

School’s Record holder Shelinda Jansen of Gateway College, Rajagiriya clinched her first Gold of the meet in the Under 20 200m final. Jansen was crowned the Best Athlete in the female category last year and is making her way to claim the title for the second consecutive time. She clinched the win with a timing of 24.6sec.

Her teammate Sadeepa Henderson also ran a 24.6sec in the final, ending the race with a nail-biting finish. However, with the hand-timing facility available at the Games, Jansen was crowned champion of the event. Dhanusha Dahanayake claimed Bronze with a timing of 25.5sec.

Lyceum International School, Wattala dominated the Boys Under 20 event, winning all three top spots. Santhush Weerasinghe led the way with a 21.8sec which also set a new meet record. Much like the Girls’ final, Kavindu Bandara came in second with the same timing and will share the meet record along with Weerasinghe. Kavindu Anjana clinched third 22.3sec.

Dulyana Suludagoda of Lyceum International School, Nugegoda reigned in the Girls’ under 18 200m final, winning Gold with a 25.5sec. Dinara Bandara of Gateway College, Colombo won second place with a timing of 25.7sec, while Chithara Wickramasinghe won the Bronze with a 26.8sec lap.

Gateway won in the Boys under 18 age group, with Pasindu Gunawardena running a 21.8sec to finish first. Navin Perera and Thenuka Piumal of Lyceum Nugegoda came in second and third consecutively, clocking 21.9sec and 22.9sec.

Day 2 will bring many more finals with the 800m, 4x100m relays, 100m and the 1500m in the track along with more field events.
