Sri Lanka’s bowlers did well to drag their 2nd and final warm-up game ahead of the T20 World Cup to the very last over, but ultimately could not prevent a 4-wicket loss to the West Indies.

Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat but sisnt get the start they wanted, with skipper Chamari Athapaththu being the 1st to fall once again, lbw to Aaliyah Alleyne. The Sri Lankan batters struggled to get going on the Western Province Cricket Ground in Cape Town, particularly against the spinners.

Off spinners Hayley Mathews and Karishma Ramharack along with leg spinner Afy Fletcher kept the Lankan batters in check with 7 wickets between them, conceding just 42 in 11 overs.

Nilakshi de Silva was the top scorer for Sri Lanka with 29 off 26 as Sri Lanka struggled to 107.

The Windies’ chase started steadily as the opening pair of Mathews and Shabika Gajnabi putting on 46 for the 1st wicket. West Indies were cruising towards the target by the 9th over, but then lost 4 quick wickets for just 16 runs, putting them in a spot of bother at 61/4 in 13 overs.

Mathews remained at the crease, but the Sri Lankan bowlers tightened the screws, dragging the game on as West Indies struggled to keep the scoreboard moving. Mathews’ run-out in the 18th over gave Sri Lanka some real hope but Chinelle Henry played a calm hand to take West Indies over the line.

With the warm-ups now completed, Sri Lanka will now shift their focus to their 1st game of the competition, which also happens to the tournament opener against host South Africa on Friday.
