ICC pays 25% money to SLC

The International Cricket Council has paid 25% of the money due to Sri Lanka Cricket for participation of ICC events – the 2014 World T-20 and 2015 World Cup. The payment to the tune of US$ 12 million was withheld after complaints to the world governing body by some previous cricket officials about government interference to SLC affairs.

Minister of Sports Naveen Dissanayake addressing journalists at the ministry auditorium yesterday said that the ICC had paid a sum of US$ three million to be made as payments for players.

The Minister was confident that the ICC will pay the remaining money very soon.

“I have received a letter from the ICC and I can tell you that it’s not confrontational at all. The ICC is not in favour of Interim Committees, but at the same time their constitution doesn’t rule out Interim Committees being appointed,” the Minister said.

“The situation is not as bad as some think. We are not like just any other cricket playing country. We are a country that has been a Full Member of the ICC for the last 35 years,” the Minister added.

It was the Sports Minister’s visionary father, the late Gamini Dissanayake, who headed Board of Control for Cricket when Sri Lanka won the Test status in 1981.
