Himasha Eshan takes 100M Gold & Abeyrathne Wins Gold for Motherland at the Championships

Sri Lanka enjoyed a respectable performance at the 76th Singapore open track and field championship at the Choachukang Stadium, Singapore which concluded on the 23rd, 24th of August, 2014.

Young sprint sensation Himasha Eshan excelled by winning the gold medal in the 100 meters event with  a timing of 10.60 seconds and also won the bronze medal in the 200 meter event in a timing of 21.44 seconds.

National record holder in the high jump event Manjula Kumara  won the silver medal with  a height of 2.19 meters. D.P.J Wimalasiri won the silver medal as well in the long jump event with a distance of 7.67 meters. The sprint queen J.T.A Abeyrathne did the double by winning first the 800 meters gold medal with a timing of 02 minutes  and 06.86 seconds and secondly winning the gold medal in the 1500 meter event with a timing of 04 minutes and 27.22 seconds.

All in all Sri Lankan athletes grabbed three golds,two silvers and one bronze medal at the championships and ended 6th in overall medals tally. The next event to look forward to is the Asian games which will be held between 19th September to 4th of October, 2014.
