Helitha Hendavitharana and Thanushi Rodrigo won the U15 championships in the Chief Minister of Western Province, Isuru Devappriya Challenge Trophy, Open All Island Ranking Table Tennis Championship, at the S.Thomas’ College Indoor Sports Complex.
Helitha defeated Dewmith Weerasena in straight sets thus avenging his loss to Dewmith a week prior at the Western Province Open Ranking Table Tennis Championship, which went to five sets.
Dewmith gave a hard fought match but Helitha was clinical when it mattered, winning the match with identical score line of 11-9, 11-9 and 11-9.
The U15 Girls’ final was sent to the limit, which was decided in 5 sets. Sayuri Ranmini won the first two sets 7-11 and 9-11 but Thanushi turned the game on its head winning the next three sets in a comfortable 11-5, 11-3 and 11-7.
The U12 Boys’ Singles too went to a fifth set where Senura Silva prevailed against Dhanushka Wijesinghe 8-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-13, and 11-8.
Jayasinghe and Piumila champions at All Island Ranking Championship
Nadithi Rehansa defeated Bimandee Bandara, losing only the 3rd set on her way to the U12 Girls’ Singles title.
Both the Boys’ and Girls’ Single finals of the U10 category proved to be exciting as it went into a thrilling 5th set.
Rasindu Jayasundara raced to a two set lead but saw it completely vanish in the next two sets against Senal Dilmith; however he recovered to win the decider 11-6 and with it the U10 Boys’ title.
Divya Dharani staged a remarkable comeback against favourite Fathmath Deema Ali, after losing the first two sets to win the U10 Girls’ Singles title 7-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-4 and 13-11.
