Hawks and Eagles settle for a close draw

The final group stage game between Colombo Hawks and Colombo Eagles in the under 21 Inter Zonal Cricket Tournament ended in an exciting draw at Moors grounds recently. 

Batting first, the Hawks made 251 runs on the back of a superb knock of 87 by left-handed Uvin Bandara. Former Peterite Janith Liyanage and Former Royal College captain Devind Pathmanathan stroked half tons. Right arm seamer Sahan Wijesinghe grabbed 4 wickets while Sangeeth Cooray and Anuk Fernando chipped in with 2 scalps each. 

The Eagles in their first innings was bowled out for 237. Three former Peterite bowlers, Chemila Obeysekara, Sahan Nanayakkara and Janith Liyanage shared 8 wickets amongst them. Former Thomian right-handed batsman Tilaksha Sumanasiri smashed an elegant 84 while his College mate Helakamal Nanayakkara stroked a patient 50. 

The Hawks commenced their 2nd innings with a lead of 14 runs and they capitalized the good batting conditions to put another 215 runs on the board in their 2nd innings. Left-handed Peterite opener Dineth Thimodya top scored with 46 while off-spinner Sangeeth Cooray grabbed a five-wicket haul. 

Chasing 230 runs to win in the final session, Cambrian Shanuka Dulaj counter-attacked with a scintillating knock of 72 but they fell short of 28 runs as the Eagles were 202 for 8 at close of play.
