Gayanthika Thushari Abeyratne and Chandrika Subashini qualified for the finals of the women’s 800m and 400m respectively as they did well in the heats of the Athletics Competition of the Asian Games in Incheon on Tuesday.

Abeyratne clocked her personal best (slashed 0.05 seconds off her previous best) when she clocked 2:04.41 seconds to finish second behind Indian Tintu Lukka in the first heat of the 800m. Sri Lanka did not sent her leading athlete of this discipline (Nimali Liyanarachchi) for the Asian Games and now Abeyratne will run in the finals where she will see two athletes from neighbouring India vie for honours.

Chandrika Subashini meanwhile qualified as the third from her heat when she clocked 23.59 seconds to finish behind Japan’s Fukushima Chisato (23.35 secs) and China’s Wei Yongli (23.55 secs).
