FUTC day 2

Gateway Kandy, Colombo International School and Gateway Colombo come out with big wins on day 2 of the FUTC 2018, with 19 goals being scored at Gateway College grounds, Ratmalana.

Gateway College, Kandy v Lyceum International School, Panadura

The match kicked off under a light drizzle which only increased throughout the first half. Gateway Kandy dominated possession in the early going, before a highly questionable decision by the Lyceum defender in the form of a blatant handball inside his own box, saw the referee point straight for the spot. The Gateway’s Dilakshan Sathasiwam confidently stepped up and slotted the penalty perfectly into the bottom corner to give the boys from Kandy the lead, ending the first half 1-0 to Gateway Kandy.

The second half saw continuous drama with Lyceum getting the first chance of the half, but the wet conditions saw the forward slip, which resulted in the shot being weak, making it a simple save for the keeper. Very poor defending by the lads from Panadura saw Gateway double their advantage through Adel Reyes after some great passing into the opposition box.

Gateway’s domination continued as this time a free-kick on the edge of the pitch was brilliantly struck, and poor judgment from the LIS Panadura keeper saw the ball find the back of the net thanks to skipper Ameen Kazhi.

The Lyceum Panadura boys seemed to be growing frustrated as tensions boiled over following a clash between two players resulting in both teams at each other’s necks, with some of Lyceum bench players unnecessarily joining the frey on the field. The clash saw Lyceum’s Shadaf Uvais shown a straight red.

Poor goalkeeping saw Gateway awarded their fourth and fifth goals through some brilliant long-range efforts, which the keeper really should have stopped. Both goals were scored by Saad Imthyas.

Colombo International School v Royal Institute

Royal Institute took the lead through their number 10, Nimantha Gunasekara after he got the ball inside the opposition box before he finished brilliantly past the onrushing keeper. The jubilation did not last long as  CIS responded immediately when a through ball caught the RI defence off guard and had CIS’ Dhanuka Gunasekara rushing on goal 1v1 against the keeper, and the forward coolly slotted it past against the onrushing keeper to equalize.

CIS continued on the front foot and not soon after struck a corner brilliantly into the middle of the box and leapt and headed it into the back of the net to give CIS the lead. It was RI’s turn to respond with an equalizer after Seiyed Arshad’s initial shot saw a brilliant save by the keeper, but Seiyed slotted in the rebound from a tight angle, finding the back of the net.

RI was gifted a third goal when the CIS keeper hesitated without rushing off his line to collect the ball, leaving Nimantha to slot in for his brace, ending the first half 3-2 to RI.

RI scored the first goal of the second half, and it was Abid Hussain this time with a blazing strike from just outside the box which crept just under the crossbar into the back of the net. RI were on the front foot from that point as they went onto score two more goals, the fifth from a strike inside the box by Abid again and the sixth, a simple tap in by Mishfaq Mohamed following a good cross into the box.

To add insult to injury RI scored yet another when Nimantha cut into the box on the dribble and slotted past the keeper, completing a fabulous hat-trick.

Gateway College, Colombo v Elizabeth Moir School

This was the third and final match of day 02, with this clash being played under the floodlights.

Gateway Colombo got the first chance of the game but the Moir keeper Daniel Joung pulled off a brilliant save.

Gateway continued on the front foot and it paid off in the 7th minute when Binitha Chandrasena broke through the defence and slotted past the keeper to open the scoring. Gateway dominated the first half, being quick to smother any attacks Elizabeth Moir attempted to mount, winning the ball back quickly and kept a much larger percentage of possession as they passed the ball around well.

Gateway doubled their lead when what seemed to be an attempted cross was headed straight for goal, and with the keeper off his line, he reacted poorly and could do nothing as the ball dipped under the crossbar into the goal, ending the first half 2-0 to Gateway, courtesy of Rashane Wijewardena.

Gateway continued their dominance in the second half, scoring their third when a free-kick was struck powerfully, and the keeper unable to catch had to parry it away, leaving Areeb Atheek to smash in the rebound.

Moir struggled both offensively and defensively as they failed to even string a few passes together without Gateway winning the ball back. This led to Gateway’s fourth goal after another bit of sloppy defending led to a simple tap in by Binitha for his second. Gateway’s utter domination continued with almost all the action taking place inside the Moir half, with Gateway’s keeper Aaqib Imthiyaz reduced to just a spectator, as Gateway added their fifth through a blistering strike by Areeb Niyas from the edge of the box.
