Rhine-Ruhr 2025, the FISU World University Games, the ultimate sporting platform for exceptional student-athletes from around the world, is happening now in Germany. It is organised by the International University Sports Federation, also known as FISU, allowing university undergraduates to showcase their sporting talents, build lasting relationships and create memories for a lifetime during their undergraduate years.
The 12-day-long games will be home to 8,500 athletes and officials from 150 countries competing in 18 sports. Different disciplines of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 games are located at numerous cities of the host country: Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Hagen, and Berlin.

The Sri Lankan Swimming team of 1 female and 3 male swimmers is tasting the Rhine-Ruhr waters in multiple events.
- Seneshi Herath is a second-year undergraduate from the University of Kelaniya, reading BSc in Sports Science, and is also a member of the National Swimming pool. Herath took part in the Women’s 50m Butterfly, 100m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly events.
- Sandev Senarathne, a final-year Sports Science undergraduate from the same university, marks his second appearance at the prestigious event, bringing in the essence from Chengdu 2021. Senarathne, being a top ranker in the National pool for swimmers, is diving into the Men’s 50m and 100m Butterfly events during the games.
- Induwara Liyanage is a second-year medicine undergraduate from the University of Peradeniya and will be taking part in Men’s 50m Butterfly, 50m and 100m Freestyle events.
- Chris Pavithra, a fresher from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura pursuing a BSc in Sports Science and Management, is also a member of the National Swimming pool, and is competing in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke, 100m and 200m Freestyle events.
The Swimming events of the games are from 17th – 24th July in Berlin.
Along with the Swimming team, a total of 28 student-athletes and 3 officials from various state universities are representing Sri Lanka at Rhine-Ruhr 2025. These athletes are competing in Badminton, Table Tennis, Tennis, Taekwondo, Rowing and Athletics.
