The first edition of the Senior national trials organized by the Athletic Associating of Sri Lanka (AASL) will be held on the 22nd & 24th February 2019 at the Sugathadasa Stadium.
Conducted as a pre-season trial, this will provide the National selectors with a first look at the available talent for the forthcoming international competitions. The AASL will be vying to select a strong outfit for the Asian Athletic Championship (April), Asian Grand Prix (May) South Asian Games (June) which will provide an opportunity for Athletes to qualify for the IAAF World Athletic Championship which will be held in Doha in late September.
Sri Lanka sent a team of 12 track and field athletes to last year’s Asian Games which was held in Indonesia. Despite returning medal-less, the Athletic team was the best performing team out of the 172-athlete contingent that was sent to the competition. A number of Sri Lankan athletes made it to the final and some would have ended up on the podium provided they achieved their personal bests.
With the first trial set to shortlist the potential athletes for the National pool, AASL has earmarked 22nd of March for the second national trial which will provide another opportunity for the athletes to achieve the qualification standards. The selectors will be keeping a keen eye on the top performers especially in the Men’s 400 & women’s 100 & 200m with Sri Lanka possessing a few athletes that would make a formidable outfit in the relays.
Men’s Long Jump will also be an interesting event at the meet with 4 athletes in the 8m mark competing against each other to make the cut for the Asian Athletic Championship.
