CH & FC defeated a hapless Police Sports Club on their own paddock, winning 29 (4T, 3C, 1P) – 05 (1T), as the Cops simply did not get going in their season opener of the Maliban Club Rugby League 2025/26.
Police Sports Club made the short trip to the Racecourse with a much-depleted squad, while CH & FC had brought in plenty of reinforcements for the new season.
The hosts started in the best possible manner, as former CR winger Samitha Warnakulasooriya found his way to the try line, breaching the Cops’ defence early on.
Janith Chandimal added the extras, making it a perfect seven. (CH 07–00 PSC)
Police were unable to hold on, as their defence was breached for a second time by the same player, with the Cops falling like nine-pins.
Warnakulasooriya crashed over on the far wing this time, as Police found themselves in trouble early.
Chandimal made easy work of the conversion, continuing his 100% kicking success. (CH 14–00 PSC)
With the Cops down by 14 points, Ashan Darling was sent to the bin for a high shot, compounding their woes.
The resulting penalty allowed CH & FC to take a shot at goal, adding three more points as the visitors remained scoreless well into the first half.
CH & FC then scored through their enormous foreign centre, Koli Thamanikalu, as the curtain drew on the first half. Thamanikalu ran across the grain to carve through the Police defence, as their hopes slowly drifted away.
Chandimal was unsuccessful with the conversion, and referee Raveen Alexander brought the first half to a close.
Half Time: CH & FC 22 (3T, 2C, 1P) lead Police SC 00
Police SC knew the second half had to be drastically different if they were to stand any chance, and they started well by getting points on the board first.
Replacement front-row forward Vihanga Shaveen was the beneficiary, crashing over from close range as Police disturbed the scorers for the first time in the match.
The big man was unstoppable, but the conversion from Pasindu Tharuka went astray, reducing the deficit by just five points. (CH 22–05 PSC)
Randy Silva was then sent to the bin for a dangerously high shot, but Police SC failed to make the numerical advantage count, as their attack once again deserted them.
CH & FC, on the other hand, did not let their disadvantage faze them and managed to score their fourth try in the dying embers of the game, as visibility worsened with fading light.
Oshan Gunaratna was the scorer of the fourth try, sniping from close range on debut. Yasas Kavindu added the conversion, ensuring CH wrapped up the game in style.
