A virtuoso performance by Dilip Peiris who scored a hat trick and a brace by Jeewantha Fernando helped Maris Stella College stroll past S.Thomas’ College at the City League grounds.

Maris Stella beats S.Thomas’ 5-0

Maris Stella opened the scoring in the 6th minute through Dilip Peiris when the Thomian defense failed to clear a routine ball and Dilip had to just tap in from close range. From the onset the visitors had the majority of possession and were camped in the Thomian territory.

The Thomians had the chance to equalize when Yohan Mendis controlled a long ball over the Maris Stella defense but his volleyed effort bounced off the crossbar. Thomian defense managed to repel the onslaught of Maris Stella attacks but in the 41st minute S.Thomas’ goalkeeper P.Gunawardena spilled an easy collection right into the path of Dilip who calmly slotted his second. S.Thomas’ had another opportunity to cut the lead in half just before half time but Quaaid Huzair couldn’t direct the ball properly from a Akhil Fernando free kick.

Right after half time Maris Stella added their 4th goal after a sweeping move down the left and the cross was met by an unmarked Jeewantha Fernando, who headed it past the goalkeeper. Jeewantha then went onto add his second of the match after a wonderful dribble going past three defenders. In the dying moments of the game Dilip Peiris secured his hat trick with a low drive past a hapless goalkeeper.

Ananda stun De Mazenod 6-2

Ananda College repeated the Netherland Spain World Cup story in Sri Lanka schools football scene when they beat hot favourites De Mazenod 6-2. This is a big win and De Mazenod now will have to wake up if they want to get in to the second round in the group led by their rivals St.Benedict’s College.

Ananda led 2 -1 at half time and the Ananda forwards penetrated the vulnerable De Mazenod defense with ease. They then went on to add another four goals in the second half while De Mazenod only managed one goal. Ananda has had an indifferent campaign so far where they have either been very good like in this match or poor like they were against S. Benedict’s. Anjana Shashika, Haritha Prabashwara and Nilusha Deshan stared for Ananda

Royal in 7th heaven

Royal College captain Haritha Gajanayaka put in a captain’s performance scoring a hat trick as they defeated Royal Institute 7-0 at Kew Points road.

Royal were awarded a penalty early on and Chathura Avishka converted it from the spot to give them the lead. The Reid Avenue boys had the lion’s share of possession and they made good use of it. Mid way through the first half a counter attack down the right flank orchestrated by Naveen Jout and Mohomed Sajid saw Sajid’s low drive just missing the far post.

With five minutes left in the first half Sajid made no mistake this time as he gathered the ball from Jout and lobbed a wonderfully weighted ball over the Royal Institute keeper to give a 2-0 lead going into half time.

Naveen Jout this time becoming the scorer added Royal’s 3rd in the 60th minute while Haritha coming into the act scored the 4th after a slick move between him and Jout. The 5th goal was added by Mohomed Thanzeel at the end of a sweeping solo dribble and beating the goalkeeper at his near post. Skipper Haritha completed his hat trick with goals in the 76th and 81st minutes.
