Mahanama College clinched their eighth straight win in the 19th Battle of the Golds – Limited overs encounter played at the Singhalese Sports Club grounds today (18th May) in a closely contested affair.
Mahanama College, opting to bowl first with the number of overs reduced to 36, got off to a flying start with the ball in hand, giving the opposition no opportunity to score freely. Youth national cap Dulnith Sigera was on target from the very first delivery with the new cherry.
Big Match hero with the bat for the Donz, Shanel Binushka, tried his best to hold the innings together with a fighting 38. However, with partners at the other end falling like a pack of cards, his efforts weren’t enough to rescue the D.S. Senanayake innings.
Gimantha Dissanayake, the main architect of the Donz’s downfall, ripped through the D.S. Senanayake batting line-up with his off-spin. He bowled at the ideal pace for a surface that required a slightly slower approach compared to other pitches prepared by the SSC groundsmen.
In reply, Mahanama College openers came out all guns blazing before a slight rain delay. They had already reached fifty by the time the rain interrupted play, putting them firmly in control. After the resumption, Mahanama College was given a revised target of 95 runs in 25 overs.
Although they lost a few wickets in the process, Mahanama College comfortably reached their target.
With this win, Mahanama College secured their eighth straight victory against D.S. Senanayake in their heated rivalry.
