Crews Prepare for Opening Regatta this weekend

The Colombo Rowing Club’s Opening Regatta for the year 2013 will be held this Friday and Saturday, the 7th and 8th of June.

This year the CRC has decided to merge some of the many small regattas they usually host during the year, into fewer large scale ones. In keeping with this policy this week’s regatta will consist of 16 events. This move is being made in an effort to bring in bigger crowds and reduce the costs of hosting regattas.

The trophies up for grabs include some famous CRC titles such as the Centenary Oars four and Vanlangeburg pair. The events include sculls, double sculls, pairs and fours in both the Men’s and Women’s sections. Senior races will be 1 Mile and Novice, Junior, Master and Open races will be 1 KM long. The regatta will see participation from schools, universities and the CRC itself.

Such a wide ranging event will give competing crews an idea of where each level of their teams stands relative to the competition. At this halfway point of the year, with the rowing season proper drawing near, teams will seek to establish their dominance quickly.

The event will be entertaining with music, and food and drinks available, so any sports enthusiasts are welcome!
