The Club Sevens tournament’s kick off has been brought..

The Dialog Rugby Inter Club Sevens was set to feature 16 teams competing for the silverware that Navy SC won last year, but the Longdon Place club has officially pulled out of the competition that will kick off this weekend. This time around, the Club Sevens will be held in two legs played two weeks apart.

The Reds were a team that was closely followed in the preseason with new developments in their coaching lineup as well as in the transfer market. The appointment of former Sri Lanka, Army SC and current St. Joseph’s College coach Nilfer Ibrahim sparked new interest in the club that saw a disappointing bottom of the table finish in the concluded Dialog Rugby League.

CR & FC made key signings ahead of the season with the likes of former Havelock Sports Club player Shehan Dias and national caps Kevin Dixon and Adeesha Weeratunga being drafted into the squad.

“We are having injuries and we do not want to risk the players so we will not be playing the 1st leg of the Dialog Club Sevens” added coach Nilfer Ibrahim on the abrupt pullout.

The Reds more or less have compiled a mini national pool  for themselves with the likes of Tarinda Ratwatte, Kavindu Perera, Omalka Gunaratne, Reyhan Silva, Reeza Raffaideen and Adeesha Weeratunga in the squad and their absence from the tournament will be clearly felt.

The tournament will thus not see the participation of 7-8 contracted national players. Tarinda Ratwatte in action in the Dialog Rugby League (Middle) CR & FC v Air Force SC

“However, we are looking to play the second leg. By that time we will have a proper unit and will be ready to play against the top teams” added coach Ibrahim on the possibilities of seeing CR in action in the shorter format.

With Kavindu Perera set to lead the side for yet another year, CR & FC are hopeful of bringing glory days to Longdon Place.
