Winless but gutsy outings by the Tuskers at the Commonwealth Games

Sri Lanka Men’s Sevens team who had a memorable day 1 at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games after scoring a try against the All Blacks and scoring 3 against England, had to face Samoa on the 2nd day of action. The Samoans who registered a win over England and nearly defeated New Zealand in their earlier games were in good form ahead of their clash against Sri Lanka.

Although the Sri Lankan defense stood firm now and then, the Samoan speed and power was too much for the Tuskers to handle as they scored 44 points while Sri Lanka didn’t get any opportunities to score.

After losing 3 out of 3 in the group stage Sri Lanka had their next assignment against Uganda in the 9th Place Quarter Finals. Uganda who had a memorable outing against the Wallabies and held them to a draw in the group stage were the clear favorites in this encounter. Against Uganda, Sri Lanka looked a lot settled as the half-time score read 19-14 in favor of Uganda. But unfortunately for the Tuskers, it was all one-way traffic during the start of the 2nd half as they took the match completely away from Sri Lanka. The final scoreline was 38-19.

With 4 losses in as many games, Sri Lanka will now face Zambia in the 13th place Semi Finals today and if Sri Lanka can pull off a win they will face either Malaysia or Jamaica in the 13th place playoff.

For the ladies rugby team, it has been a tough ride as they were completely dominated during all their games. After failing to score a single try in their losses against New Zealand and England on Day 1, the ladies faced Canada in their first game of Day 2, but once again the result was the same as a much more powerful Canadian side scored 74 points to Sri Lanka’s zero. After that result, the women’s team faced Scotland in the 5th place semi-finals but once again it was all one-way traffic as the Scotland ladies scored 58 points but Sri Lanka were once again stuck on 0.

On day 3 Sri Lanka Women’s team will face South Africa in the 7th place playoff.
