The Colombo Kings recorded their fourth win in the inaugural Lanka Premier League 2020 by defeating the Kandy Tuskers by 7 wickets in the 13th game of the tourney.

The dewfall was minimal at Hambantota today. The Kandy Tuskers would have been happy to hear this even though they would have batted first anyway after winning the toss, regardless of the state of dewfall. They were sticking to the mantra of the tournament – put a big score on the board and create pressure.

Chandimal, Ahmad help the Kings beat the unbeatable

There were two changes in the Kandy Tuskers line up – Irfan Pathan and Lasith Embuldeniya replaced Naveen-ul-Haq and Seekkuge Prasanna, while Colombo Kings remained unchanged from the previous game.

Colombo’s new-look bowling unit

The pace unit has been the X-factor for the Kings in the last two games. They have looked a completely different outfit from what they were in the first two games.

Angelo Mathews, Isuru Udana, Dushmantha Chameera and Andre Russell were spot on at the start keeping things neat and tidy, drying up runs and most importantly picking up wickets.

Mathews and Russell did the containing part, while Chameera rushed at them with intimidating pace and bounce. One cannot stress enough on how impressive this right-arm quick has been lately. It is safe to say he is one of the players who were rejuvenated during the tourney. A wicket each for Russell and Mathews were a bonus.

Ali, Dickwella and Tharanga usher Viiking to semifinals

Qais Ahmad was once again sensational as the leg-spinner bagged 2 wickets for just 8 runs, putting Kandy in deep trouble.

“Kandy kept rolling down Hunnasgiriya” – Russel Arnold

The Tuskers were hopeless with the bat as Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the only batsman who managed a decent score of 34 runs. The next best was Irfan Pathan’s 18 runs, as 8 players wrote single digit scores in the scorecard.

Wickets kept falling in clusters as Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Gurbaz, Brendan Taylor and Asela Gunaratne were all back in the hut within the first 10 overs. The game had slipped so far away from the Tuskers by that point.

The Kings caught up after a rocky start

Colombo Kings too had a shaky start as they were at 52 for 3 at the end of 7 overs. However, Chandimal made sure no further damage was done as he steered Colombo past the target steadily.

Chandimal seems to be in fine form at the top of the order as he scored an unbeaten 35 runs and carried his bat through for the second consecutive time.

With this win, Colombo Kings will be the third team to secure their spot in the semi-finals.
