Commonwealth games; Chathuranga Lakmal wins Sri Lanka’s first medal

Weightlifter Chathuranga Lakmal Jayasooriya won Sri Lanka’s first medal at the 21st Commonwealth Games when he secured a Bronze medal in the 56Kg Weight category a short while ago today (5th).

Lakmal cleared a total weight of 248Kg on his way to the Bronze medal in the men’s 56Kg weight category which is Sri Lanka’s first medal at the 21st Commonwealth Games which commenced yesterday(4th) in Gold Coast, Australia. Lakmal snatched 114Kg while he managed 134Kg in the clean and jerk. Muhammad Azroy Hazawala of Malaysia won Gold event in the clearing a total weight of 261Kg while Indian Gururaja was placed ahead of Lakmal edging him out by a solitary Kilo in the overall weight cleared, managing to lift 249Kg.

Lakmal is a member of the 11-strong weight lifting contingent that is representing the country at the Commonwealth Games which includes 07 Male and 04 Female lifters.  The lifters do not have to look far for inspiration with Sri Lanka’s flag bearer at the event and two-time Commonwealth medalist Chinthana Vidanage leading the team to achieve great heights at the event.
