Central Men and Western Women Clinch NSF 2025 Athletics Championships

The most awaited event of the 49th National Sports Festival, the Athletics Championship, concluded successfully at the Galle District Open Sports Complex, Dadalla, Galle, during the last weekend. The event was organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports with the collaboration of the Department of Sports Development. After a series of exhilarating track and field events, the Central Province men and Western Province women secured the championships.

The Best Men’s Athlete award went to A. A’ P. Malshan of Western Province for finishing the triple jump by setting a new meet record with a magnificent leap of 16.37 m. Further, Sayuri Lakshima of Western Province emerged as the Best Women’s Athlete by finishing the women’s 400m event with a fabulous run of 56.40 seconds.

Best Athletes – A. A. P Malshan and Sayuri Lakshima

During the most eye-catching event, the 100m, Chamod Yodasinghe & Shafiya Yarmick of Central Province emerged as the fastest man and woman among all the athletes. Apart from this, Shafiya Yarmick also clinched the gold medal in the 200 m event.

In the final two events of the men’s and women’s 400m relays, the Central Province men and Southern Province women emerged victorious after a fine display of their talents. At the 100m relays, Western Province sides took the men’s and women’s golds after electrifying races.

But the event failed to see any new national records, but the athletes managed to set 5 new meet records as follows.
