The maiden encounter of the Colombo Super League was played today at the Henry Pedris Basketball Complex between St.Peter`s College vs. Jousters BC. Peterites outsmarting the opponents in every area won the game at full time 51-24.
The game commenced at six on the dot with the traditional jump ball start. Even though the Peterites had the first possession they failed to convert it to points. Coming back into the game in the next, they drew first blood off a post move. Skipper Yohan swished the nets from downtown right after putting the lads upfront 5-0. Doing an astounding job in defense they restricted the opponents from scoring for six long minutes in the maiden quarter. There is not too much to say about the offense of the Jousters BC as they lacked a proper plan. Peterites gaining advantage over it led the quarter 21-2.
The second quarter commenced with a nineteen point Peterite lead. Peterites opting for more fast breaks, scattered the defense of the foes as they ran the ball wide across the court. Jousters BC failing to adjust into the fast play left the Peterite territory opened at the other end, which made life even easier for them. It was nothing too much to ask from the Jousters BC; but just to stick to the basics. Peterites scored thirteen points in the quarter while Josuters BC only managed eight. Both offensive and defensive rebounds were falling in the hands of the Peterites. There seemed to be no competition as the opponents did not even try to block and etch the rebounds. The game was called off for water, melons and lemons as Peterites lead the game 32-10.
Half time – St.Peter`s College – 32 Jousters BC – 10
The Peterites walked back after a ten minute break without much pressure. Jousters BC lacking the services of a coach were miserable with a counter game plan. They did give it their all but it was in vain as they did not stick to the basics. If they did then of course there would have been some competition for the lads from Bambalapitiya.
Even though they did not have such a competition, the defense and the offense of the Peterites were spot on. They did have a few unforced errors which resulted in a few leakage of points, but the rest was in fine tune. Running the ball in the hands of every player and waiting for the lapse in defense to shoot were good signs from lads who are still in the school fraternity.
Jousters BC was walking down a lost cause and never did show signs of a competitive unit. Getting onto a brilliant start and building upon it, Peterites rolled out 51-24 victory at full time.
