CBSL 2015: HSC Youth ease past Wattala BC

180

HSC Youth recorded their second victory in the tournament when they rolled out for a 61-48 at full time. Wattala BC was in desperate need to win the encounter but the HSC Youth were just a bit too good in a Colombo Super League match which was played at Hendry Pedris Basketball Stadium.

The match commenced at twenty minutes after six which was recorded as a late start. HSC Youth won the traditional jump ball and made it count when Tharindu Fernando’s shot off the arc got the home team an early start of 3-0. HSC Youth went on to dominate the court as they scored ten points without letting the opponents score a single point. Rebounds coming in handy for the home team was the main point on why they did dominate the quarter. It was the simple equation of rebounding, running the ball wide across and opting for the fast break which won the game for them at the end. Wattala BC failed to adapt to the situation and make the transition of offence to defense a deft one so that could have prevented the fast break. Rebounds were not their strong suit during the first quarter. The maiden ten minutes concluded putting the home team ahead 22-10.

Wattala BC did settle themselves down in the game a bit during the second quarter but they lacked proper structure in both their offence and defense. The home team capitalizing on that continued to run the ball wide and opt for the fast breaks. Wattla BC elected for man-to-man defense but they did not engage on it in a commendable manner. The defense of the home team was on point. They made sure that they covered all lanes possible for the offensive player to drive in and score. HSC Youth scored thirteen points while Wattala BC did managed to score eleven points off odd shots with no proper play in offense. The game was halted for water, and lemons putting the home team in a commanding lead.

Half Time – HSC Youth – 35 Wattala Basketball Club – 21

Wattala BC did possess the talent to take the game back home but it was just not their day. They did make a way in to the game etching their rebounds well in comparison to the first quarter. They did well in etching the defensive rebounds but not so with the offensive. It took away their second chance at the basket and it did count at the full time. If they had got the second chance there was a possibility of squaring the game in the third quarter since they scored thirteen points in the quarter. HSC Youth scored only twelve. The ball handling of the home team and scoring through strategic plays in the offense was what took them over the edge. The third quarter came to a close HSC Youth still leading 47- 32.

The final ten minutes of the game commenced and HSC Youth give it their all to take home game. All Wattala BC had to do was stick to the basics and pass the ball around and make sure they created lapses in the defense so they could have driven in and scored. Instead they tried to opt for set shots outside the arc which was hard to do in front of a quality defense from the home team. Even though they did score fourteen points in the quarter, just like HSC Youth it was a tough ask for them to come back into the game as the home team had a strong foundation and they built the rest upon it. With the ten minutes running down, HSC Youth tucked the game in their pockets and walked away with victory.
