The first week of the second round of the Singer schools league championship we witnessed some enthralling games of rugby as the eight teams proceeding to the cup segment battled it out for supremacy. In the games played there were a few players that stood out from the rest.
The round two games of the Singer Schools League kicked off over the weekend and the battle for the top slot continued as eight schools advanced to the cup segment based on their performances in the first round.

Unlike in the previous years, the schools rugby has had many changed been implemented to further enhance and develop the sport at the grass-root levels. One such change is the introduction of a brand new format which is currently being used this season.
Trinity managed to overcome science in their first round two game held at Pallekelle last evening.
Royal College took on St Peters College at the Royal College Sports Complex yesterday. This clash has had its twists and turns over the past few years and has always been a close tussle for supremacy. Crowds flocked to the complex expecting it to be the same this year.
Kingswood College beat St.Josehp’s College 17 points to 13 in their first game of the second round in the Singer under 20 inter- schools League rugby championship. The home team collected their points through 2 goals and a penalty. The visitors scored a goal and two penalties.
Isipathana College sent a strong message to their rivals, showing why they are the team to beat this season, as they thoroughly outclassed S.Thomas’ College at the Havelocks Sports Club.
Now that the schools format, which we condemned at the outset, has relegated poor Wesley to play in the Plate, and allowed some underperforming sides like Joes and Thora to remain in the top division, we move to the second round games which involve the top 8.
The second match in plate category between CWW Kannangara and D.S. Senanayake was worked off last evening at the C R and FC grounds.

The plate category got under way in the Singer Schools Rugby league 2014 between Wesley College and Prince of Wales` College at Longdon place which was a superb display of rugby where Wesley beat Prince of Wales by 22 (1G 3T) – 20 (1G 2T 1P) points after trailing 17 – 00 at the first half.
