The League’s Impact players week 6

116

The first week of the second round of the Singer schools league championship we witnessed some enthralling games of rugby as the eight teams proceeding to the cup segment battled it out for supremacy. In the games played there were a few players that stood out from the rest.

Shamilka Kurumbalapitiya – Full Back (St.Joesephs’)

The close tussle between Kingswood College and St.Josephs ended in favor of Kingswood, but Shamilka Kurumbalapitiya the St.Joesephs full back once again was brilliant in attack, cruising in to space helped by his ability to side step any opposition. His attacking game has been eye catching and his defensive efforts have too been solid. He seems to be a player growing in confidence with every game.

Imthisham Jaleel – Wing three quarter (Kingswood)

Imthisham Jaleel has been a try scoring machine for Kingswood. The speedster has the knack for chasing kicks managing to beat all to the try line on most occasions. He is also skilled and carries the strength to stay on his feet. Strength, speed & skill can be a deadly combination on the rugby field. He has scored six tries thus far in the season and is sure to score more and will be the man to watch out for on the wing.

Supun Warnakulasuriya – Hooker (Royal)

Royal played an impressive game against St.Peters despite losing the Bradby the previous week and the first eight for Royal were instrumental in this victory. Amongst the forwards Hooker Supun Warnakulasuriya stood out scoring two tries. Supun on the day was determined in attack and solid in defense and played a significant part in spoiling hopes of a League title for the Peterites.

Kevin Dixon – Centre three quarter (St.Peters)

Kevin Dixon the leading try scorer in the cup segment needs no praise on his running game. He is a treat to watch with ball in hand. He is also a sound defender yet was guilty on the day of letting a Royal ball carrier slip away which led to a try been scored for Royal. However he made sure he made amends for his mistake when he came back strongly in the 70th minute of the game showing character to score for his team.

Shenal Silva – Fly half (Isipathana)

Shenal Silva led from the front for the Isipathaians scoring two tries and creating many opportunities for his team mates to cross the try line. His stepping and quick acceleration with the vision he possess to spot the gaps on the field has been a great advantage for the green shirts.

Isuru Rangala – No: 8 (Trinity)

Isuru Rangala the no: 8 for Trinity, has been steadily reaching his peak over the past few games. From the crucial turn overs at break downs to chasing down field kicks or powering his way through a couple of defenders, he has been in the thick of things. Rangala had a good all round game over the weekend against Science and is definitely a player for the future.
