The annual rugby big match between St. Aloysius College and Richmond College will come alive on the 15th of July 2019 for the 26th time for the prestigious ‘T. V. Sumanasekara’ Trophy.
The ‘big match’ of the south, the Aloysius-Richmond rugby encounter is one of the most looked-forward fixture in the sporting calendar of the two esteemed institutions. It is also a day both school fraternities enjoy a fellowship which strengthens the brotherhood each year.
Deputy Inspector General. T. V. Sumanasekara was based in Galle in the year 1992 when the two schools first locked horns, and due to the respect he earned in his tenure, both school authorities joined hands and decided to play for a shield, in honour of him.
Last year, it was a special occasion for the teams as they celebrated the Silver Jubilee of the Trophy. Defending Champions from 2016, Aloysius College managed to defend their title after beating the Richmondites 20 points to nil at the BOI Grounds, Koggala.
