Starting off Sri Lanka’s sevens season, a young outfit will take flight to Borneo to play the Borneo Eagles Rugby Sevens.  The Sri Lanka national rugby side will have two fresh debutants in the front line.

Former Isipathana College player and current Navy flanker Adeesha Weerathunga will make it to the team while the national selectors have also opted to go with Havelock Sports Club lock forward Sithum Peiris. Both Weerathunga and Peiris were stand out players in their respective club jerseys in the concluded Dialog Rugby season and will be looking to make a good first impression.

The team led by Sudarshana Muthtuthanthri will have a fresh team for the opening tournament of the 2018 calendar year as the Sri Lanka Men’s team look to improve on their performance from last year.

Senior campaigners such as Jason Dissanayake, Srinath Sooriyabandara, and Richard Dharmapala have been given a break to recover ahead of the Commonwealth games coming up in April.

The last year’s team was defeated in the cup quarterfinals and were later runners up in the Plate segment.

The 12-member touring squad will be as follows:

  1. Sudarshana Muthuthanthri (C)
  2. Tarinda Ratwatte
  3. Kavindu Perera
  4. Chanaka Chandimal
  5. Danush Dayan Chandradas
  6. Adeesha Weerathunga
  7. Sithum Peiris
  8. Sudam Sooriyarachchi
  9. Reeza Raffaideen
  10. Kevin Dixon
  11. Buddhima Piyarathane
  12. Reyhan Silva

Peter Woods will continue as coach for the men’s side while he will be assisted by Rajeeva Perera. Inthi Marikar will be the team’s High Performance Manager while Nic Groube will function as trainer.
