The much-awaited Red Bull Campus Cricket Tournament 2016 – Sri Lanka leg commenced yesterday with two first-round clashes being worked out at Thurstan College.

The star-studded Business Management School and the reigning Schools T20 winners, St. Peter’s College recorded comprehensive victories to book their place in the pre-quarter finals.

The specialty of this year’s competition would be the participation of a few schools and a number of domestic players including a few national players. Last year’s champions, ICBT will not be participating this year. A total of 18 teams would be playing this year’s tournament.

BMS vs CCS

Geshan Wimaladharma led Business Management School to a comfortable 5-wicket win over College of Chemical Science in the first game of the day.

Former Anandian off-spinner, Wimaladharma and former Royal College left-arm spinner, Devind Padmanathan picked up 2 wickets each as CCS was restricted to only 88. Lahiru Kariyawasam played a lone hand of 42.

Interestingly, BMS have two national players in their ranks, Shehan Jayasuriya and Dasun Shanaka. Janith Liyanage and Tilaksha Malshan fell cheaply but Wimaladharma steered the chase with a flawless 30.

St. Peter’s vs IIT

The in-form St. Peter’s College, making their maiden appearance in the Red Bull tournament knocked off Informatics Institute of Technology by 79 runs in the second game of the day.

The Peterites batting first clobbered 188 from their allotted 20 overs. Right-handed opening batsman Inesh Fernando slammed 60 while Sri Lanka U19 discard, Manelkar De Silva made 48.

In reply, IIT managed only 109 from their 20 overs. Off-spinner, Taneesha Weerakoon and seamer Chandula Jayamanne picked up 2 wickets each for the winners.

St. Peter’s – 188 for 6 in 20 overs: Inesh Fernando 60, Manelkar De Silva 48, Lakshan Kanishka 2/27.

IIT – 109/7 in 20 overs: Shehan Kahandugoda 25, Kalana Dilshan 17, Taneesha Weerakoon 2/18, Chandula Jayamanne 2/16.
