It is that time of the year again when two Hockey powerhouses in the schools’ arena make their way to the turf for the 12th Annual Ladies’ vs Bishop’s Hockey Encounter. With less than a week to go for the 2016 fixture, the young but determined Bishop’s College team are ready to take up the challenge against their rivals.

This hockey encounter between the two teams is often considered to be akin to a ‘big match’ and is a fixture that is looked forward to annually. The encounter comes alive for the 12th successive occasion this weekend at the Astro Turf.

After last year’s disappointing loss, the Bishopians will be looking to get back into a winning stride with many of the senior players from last year retained in the playing squad. The availability of last year’s skipper and deputy skipper; Umaya Samaranayake and Roshana Tissaaratchchy will be one their biggest advantages when it comes to experience as they have been playing for over four years.

Forward Amasha Saraph will lead the Bishopian team for this year’s encounter while in her assistance will be deputy skipper Shamindri Perera who will be supporting her in the forward line. The duo, along with Ashini Ranasinghe, Laura Edwards and Shalonika Jeevananthan, add in the extra experience along with the freshers who will be donning the Purple jerseys for the first time.

The Bishopians will be depending on their up and coming players when it comes to the defence with much of the responsibilities rested on Tenuki Samaranayake and Mirasha Borham who will function as the goalkeepers of the side.

Speaking to ThePapare.com, Bishopian skipper Amasha Saraph added that their team will have to depend on the youngsters in the upcoming encounter.

“We have six freshers and most of the people in the under 17 are repeating the under 19 match but they have worked their way to improve their fitness level and all of them have one intention; It is not about winning but wanting to win”

“Our team is not just a team, it’s more than a team. It’s a family”

The team is coached by Dinesha Perera and G. H. Jayatissa.

ThePapare.com will be bringing you the live action from the 12th Ladies College vs Bishop’s College encounter on the 22nd of October from 2.30 p.m. onwards.
