Colombo’s leading girl’s schools- Bishop’s College and Ladies’ College- had their 12th annual hockey encounter at the Astro Turf Grounds on Saturday, the 22nd of October 2016.

This twelve-year-old encounter was first initiated with the simple thought of bringing together the two leading girls’ schools with the intention of establishing friendships among one another. This simple aim has allowed this encounter to be one of the biggest and most awaited big matches with regard to girls’ schools.

The chief guest for this event was Mrs Hiranthi De Silva, the Hockey Captain of Bishop’s College for the year 1982.

Both schools daringly strived to keep the flags of their alma maters flying high in both the Under 17 and Under 19 matches. However, Bishop’s College was indeed successful in their attempt to win back the shield by winning the Under 17 match, 3-0 and by drawing the Under 19 match 1 all against Ladies’ College.

LC v BC -12th Annual Hockey EncounterFrom the beginning till the first half of the Under 17 match everyone expected the match to be a draw, however events took a turn with the start of the second half of the game. By gaining the penalty corner for the second half, Suada Azmy (No.03) from Bishop’s College was able to put the first goal. Thereafter two more goals was scored one after the other, despite the defensive and attacking effort put in by the Ladies’ College team. Even though several attempts were made by the forward line of Ladies’ College to score a goal, the defense line of Bishop’s College was well prepared to overthrow any attempts made. Thus allowing the Bishop’s College team captained by Heshani Herath and Ayindhie Alles to claim the Under 17 championship with a score of 3-0 against the Ladies’ College team captained by Heshanthi Munasinghe and Shanya Navaratne.
The much awaited match for the evening was the Under 19 match in which both teams were well qualified experience vice as well as skill vice. Within the first half of the match the forward lines of both teams strived hard to score a goal however due to minor drawbacks they were unable to do so. Regardless, the Bishop’s College team excelled in being able to score the first goal of the match, but soon after the LC v BC -12th Annual Hockey EncounterLadies’ College team was able to catch up with them by being able to score a goal from the half line. This led way for the match to finish with a draw resulting in a score of 1-1 by both teams. The Bishop’s College team captained by Amasha Saraph and Shamindri Perera shared the shield with the Ladies’ College team was captained by Anishka Gunasekara, Yevinka Ellepola and Nihinsa Vidhanapathirana for this category.
