Bhagya Palihawadana takes Trinity to Victory

A thrilling knock by Trinity’s opening batsman Sajith Bhagya Palihawadana took Trinity to a 1st innings win over Gurukula College Kelaniya in their School’s league tournament game held at Asgiriya Stadium yesterday.

 

The visitors coming into bat first, went on to put the Trinity bowlers to the sword as they amassed a total of 218 runs for eight wickets before declaring after 83 over’s had been bowled. Gurukula’s three figure score was a result of the excellent batting performance put in by the duo Kasun Madusanka and Roshan Anurudda who steered the team through. Madusanka scored 80 runs before he was dismissed while Roshan Anuruddha ended in a score of 54.

In the bowling department, it was not quite the best pitch for bowling and it was the spinners who kept up to the beat. Lakshan Jayasinghe picked four wickets for 54 runs at the end of his spell and Pramodya Abeykoon was the next successful lad with the ball who ended with figures of 2 for 58.

Coming into bat in the final session of day one, the Trinitians ended at 41 for no loss. Resuming play the home lads went to put up a stand of 227 runs for the loss of 7 wickets before they opted to declare. The stand out in the Lion’s innings was opening batsman Bhagya Paliahwadana who scored a quick 128 runs which consisted of 15 fours and a six which was his maiden century. He together with Lakshitha Dassanayake put on a 100 run partnership for the first wicket taking the game away from the visitors. 

Trinity Declared on 227 after getting possession of the first innings victory. Coming in to bat Gurukula Central was able to score 147 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their second innings before play was called off. With this, Trinity College secured another first innings victory and their first outright victory is yet to be achieved
