South African limited overs captain, Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the ongoing Sri Lankan tour with a fractured thumb. Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj is to take over the captaincy for the ODI leg of the tour.

Bavuma suffered a blow to his right thumb during the 26th over of the 1st ODI at R. Premadasa International Stadium. The Proteas skipper was trying to evade a fielder’s throw to the wicket-keeper which accidentally hit him on the thumb. He had to retire-hurt 2 overs later due to persistent pain.

Scans revealed a fractured thumb and Bavuma will return to South Africa as soon as possible for further consultations. His return to the game will be determined subsequently. 

The senior spinner of the team, Keshav Maharaj have taken over the captaincy for the 50-over leg and the National Selection Panel of South African Cricket will announce the T20 skipper in due course. 

Sri Lanka is 1-0 up in the ODI series as they defeated the visitors in the 1st ODI that concluded on Thursday, 2nd of September. The second 2nd ODI will be played on Saturday the 4th of September.
