Battle of the Golds ends in a draw

 The 63rd ‘Battle of the Golds’, between St Sebastian’s College and Prince of Wales College concluded in a draw last evening (8).

Prince of Wales College who won the toss yesterday managed to bat first to score 162 runs in their first inning as St Sebastian’s College managed to curtail the POW 1st innings to 54.4 overs. Captain Kusal Mendis slashed out an amazing six and four fours to score 48 runs but was beaten by Sangeeth Cooray. Ashen Mendis added two fours to his much needed 30 but was sent to the dressing room by yet another Sangeeth Cooray delivery. Shanuka Dulaj who scored 31 was bowled out while Suchira Fernando along with Chrishen Aponso scored 14 and 15 runs apiece. Anuk Fernando, one of the best players possessed by the Sebs sealed 4 wickets. 

Sebastian’s in their 1st innings managed to record 180 runs (in 78 overs) in their first innings, hence recorded a first inning victory. Avishka Fernando was just behind one run to his half ton when he was beaten by Thilan Nimesh of Prince of Wales. Sangeeth Cooray was caught by Captain Kusal Mendis for a score of 40. POW managed to limit Gayan Silva, Anushka Perera, Luke Jayadewa for 10, 19 and 10 runs respectively. Thilan Nimesh secured four wickets under his name, while Dewaka Dabare contributed with three wickets.

With a trial of 18 runs, Prince of Wales College scored 134 runs in 32 overs with the loss of five wickets. Captain Kusal Mendis slashed out two sixes and three fours to score 41 runs while Suchira Fernando contributed with a six and two fours (35). Both the superiors were sent out by Pramesh Fernando. Ashen Mendis and Hasitha Lanka had recorded 23 and 21 respectively while they were beaten by Anushka Perera.

The Sebs were unable to kick start their second innings as the day came to the end. Skipper Kusal Mendis of the Prince of Wales College was awarded as the man of the match while Thilan Nimesh was nominated as the best bowler. Best Fielder and best batsman awards were sealed by Sebastianites as Sachintha Fonseka appeared as the best Fielder and Avishka Fernando as the best batsman.
