3rd edition of the “Battle of the Golden Queens” Big Match – Princess of Wales College vs Yashodhara Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo
The second edition of the “Battle of the Golden Queens” unfolded at the P. Sara Oval International Cricket Stadium recently, and the lasses from Princess of Wales College, Moratuwa, went for a dominating 147-run victory to defend the title that they won in the inaugural edition.
Vishmi Soyza, the Skipper of Princess of Wales, won the toss and decided to bat. Students both present and past, as well as other sports enthusiasts gathered in numbers at the historical stadium where Sri Lankans started playing their Test Cricket.
The Captain of the Princess of Wales side opened the inning, and Yashodhara got a perfect start with an early breakthrough. Later the Skipper Vishmi along with Umayangana Peiris, made a valuable and solid partnership for the Princess. Then the Yashodhara Balikavians struck back firmly by picking up three quick wickets, and the lasses from Moratuwa were in trouble with a score of 94/4 on the board.
Afterwards, a crucial partnership of 138 runs came between Nethmi Fernando and Sanalka Senanayake to escalate their side into a winning position. At the end of the allotted 40 overs, the Princess of Wales batters managed to score 257 runs for 7 wickets. Nethmi Fernando scored an unbeaten 71 runs, while Sanalka Senanayake made a valuable contribution with a half century. Diwyaprabha Dewanarayana was the successful bowler with a spell of 1/28. However, Anjana Indumini was the most economical bowler, even though she failed to pick up a wicket.
In reply, Yashodhara looked like they were on track to the target, but Nethuli managed to take the leading edge of the bat of Yashodhara Captain Vishmi, and she was caught at the point area. Since that point, the lasses from Moratuwa were right on track and took six wickets for just 63 runs.
Afterwards, the top scorers for Yashodhara, Dulmi de Silva and Dinanga Wijesinghe, added a 34-run partnership to give some respect to their innings. However, Yashodhara’s innings was bundled out for just 110 runs against the ruthless bowling attack and decent fielding of Princess. Imesha and Dinithi completely destroyed Yashodhara’s innings with magnificent bowling by picking up four and three wickets respectively.
At the end of the day, the 2nd Battle of the Golden Queens ended by giving a mammoth 147-run victory to the Princess of Wales College.
