Tanvir Islam’s maiden 5-wicket haul overcame Janith Liyanage’s valiant half-century as Bangladesh levelled the three-match series 1-1 with a 16-run win over Sri Lanka in the second ODI on Saturday (5th July) at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Asitha Fernando’s career-best ODI bowling figures helped Sri Lanka restrict Bangladesh to 248 after they opted to bat first.

For the second time in the series, Tanzim Hasan removed Pathum Nissanka, who continues to struggle for form in ODIs this year. Sri Lanka lost their first wicket in just the second over of the chase, with only 6 runs on the board.

Then, Kusal Mendis went on the attack during the powerplay. He took on Tanvir Islam in the 8th over, smashing 17 runs, and followed it up with four consecutive boundaries to bring up his 34th ODI fifty off just 20 balls. However, Nishan Madushka fell in the next over, and Sri Lanka ended the first 10 overs at 75 for 2.

Kusal’s innings slowed slightly before he was dismissed for a blistering 56 off 31 balls by Tanvir. Bangladesh capitalised on the momentum, applying pressure on the middle order. Sri Lanka lost their way, slipping to 132 for 6 inside 30 overs. Kamindu Mendis made a patient 33 off 51 balls, but with Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana falling cheaply, the hosts were left reeling at 170 for 8.

Janith Liyanage then found a valuable partner in Dushmantha Chameera, as the pair revived Sri Lanka’s hopes with a gritty half-century stand for the ninth wicket. Liyanage brought up his fifty and found a few boundaries after a cautious start. He fought hard, but was dismissed for 78 by Mustafizur Rahman with 21 runs still needed.

Eventually, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 232, handing Bangladesh a much-needed win to keep the series alive.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh lost Tanzid Hasan in the first three overs, but Parvez Hossain, who made his debut in the previous game, brought up his maiden ODI fifty. He shared a half-century stand for the second wicket with Najmul Hossain Shanto, who was dismissed for 14 by Charith Asalanka.

Wanindu Hasaranga bowled a wicket-maiden in the 20th over, removing Parvez for a well-made 67 off just 69 balls. The hosts kept chipping away with regular wickets. Dushmantha Chameera sent back Mehidy Hasan for 9, before Shamim Hossain and Jaker Ali fell in the twenties to Asitha Fernando.

Batting at No. 4, Towhid Hridoy held firm at one end and went on to register his 8th ODI half-century. However, a huge mix-up with Tanzim Hasan resulted in the well-set Hridoy being run out for 51, leaving Bangladesh at 218 for 9.

Tanzim added valuable runs with a quick-fire knock, especially attacking Hasaranga to take Bangladesh closer to the 250 mark. But he lost his partner, Mustafizur Rahman, who was trapped LBW by Hasaranga.

Fernando was outstanding, finishing with figures of 4 for 35 in 9 overs. Hasaranga, though expensive, picked up 3 wickets.

Earlier, the visitors made two changes to the XI — Shamim Hossain and Hasan Mahmud were brought in, while Litton Das (due to poor form) and Taskin Ahmed missed out.

For Sri Lanka, spin-bowling all-rounder Dunith Wellalage returned to the side as Milan Rathnayake, who made his ODI debut in the first game, was left out. Speedster Dushmantha Chameera also made a comeback after an absence of nearly 17 months, replacing Eshan Malinga.
