Kamindu Mendis puts up a show at Hambantota

Bangladesh ‘A’ tour of Sri Lanka 2019 | 1st Unofficial Test – Day 3

398

The first Unofficial Test between the touring Bangladesh ‘A’ side and Sri Lanka ‘A’ ended in a high scoring draw at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota. Sri Lanka A won a lead of 90 runs in the first innings.

Hosts started the third days’ play in a decent position (204/2) thanks to a brilliant century by opener Sangeeth Cooray, chasing Bangladesh A’s first innings total of 360. Overnight batsmen, Kamindu Mendis and skipper Ashan Priyanjan continued their good work for another 12.5 overs, putting a 79 runs partnership.

Priyanjan was the first fall of the day, trapped infront of wicket by Mehedi Hasan Miraz’s off break for 37. Prolific run-scorer Ashen Bandara soon followed him to the pavilion without making much of an impact.

Meanwhile, Kamindu Mendis notched up a strokeful century reminding his value to everyone as a genuine all rounder in multi-day cricket. He was well supported by Priyamal Perera who quietly went past the half century mark in no time.

Perera’s 75-ball 61 included 9 boundaries and Perera and Mendis’ 94 run partnership propelled Sri Lanka past Bangladesh A’s first innings score. After gaining the first innings advantage, Mendis looked to stretch the lead as he upped the tempo of his innings. Finally he was dismissed putting an end to his marathon innings of 169 runs off 282 balls as Mohommed Mithun found a way to rattle his stumps in the 107th over.

Home team was soon bundled out for 450 runs after Mendis’s dismissal, gaining a 90 run lead for the first innings. But it left room for only 1 over to be bowled in the 2nd innings in Bangladesh as the game ended in a draw.

The 2nd and last match of the Test (unofficial) series will be held on 4th October at the same ground. That will be a four-day game unlike the first unofficial Test which had to be rescheduled due to bad weather.
