Sri Lanka complete another chase to put one foot in the Asia Cup final

Once again it was a complete all-round performance from Sri Lanka as they chased down 173 against India in Dubai, to put themselves in a prime situation to make it to the final of Asia Cup.

Dasun Shanaka once again called right at the toss and unsurprisingly chose to bowl first. India got off to a poor start with Maheesh Theekshana trapping KL Rahul in front – it was a marginal call and Rahul did review, but with the on field call being out, the decision went in Sri Lanka’s favour.

The next wicket is perhaps will be one remembered for a while, certainly by the youngster Dilshan Madushanka, as he shattered Virat Kohli’s stumps to dismiss him for a duck.

Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav put on 97 for the 3rd wicket to get India back into the game but Sri Lanka kept picking up wickets to keep India in check. Asitha Fernando had a rough night once again, but Shanaka brought himself on to complete the 5th bowler’s quota, finishing with 2/26.

Despite Wanindu Hasaranga going wicketless once again, the others chipped in to once again keep India to a manageable target.

Madushanka was good once again, finishing with 3/24, while Chamika Karunaratne also chipped in with 2 wickets.

In the chase, Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka started off brilliantly, putting on 97 for the first wicket. It was once again just a masterclass in T20I batting, as the pair worked the field, while also regularly finding the boundary.

However, the dismissal of Nissanka, who hit a near-flawless half century, brought about a mini collapse as Sri Lanka lost 4 wickets for just 13 runs between the 12th and the 15th over. Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin accounting for the 4 to fall.

Shanaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa came together with 64 needed off 5.5 overs and managed to keep Sri Lanka afloat, the latter taking on the two spinners despite the risk, leaving Sri Lanka needing 7 off the last over in the end.

Arshdeep Singh, nearly pulled off an incredible defense, bowling yorker after yorker to the pair, but Sri Lanka finally got home thanks to 2 byes, with Rishabh Pant and Arshdeep himself missing two run-out opportunities at either end off the penultimate delivery of the game.

Sri Lanka are now more or less confirmed a spot in the final, while India will need both Sri Lanka and Afghanistan to beat Pakistan if they are to have any chance of making it through.
