The first match of Pool B at Coolangatta Beach pitted world rank 176th Sri Lankan duo, Asanka Pradeep and Malintha Yapa against world rank 129th Robin Miedzybrodzki and Seain Cook. After a thrilling 3 sets, Cook and Brodzki won 21-15, 18-21 & 16-14.

Asanka and Yapa got off to a slow start in the 1st set as Cook and Brodzki took an early 4-0 lead. The Scottish pair maintained the 4-point lead and sometimes extended it to 5 as they eventually won the 1st set 21-15.

In the 2nd set too, Scotland took a 2-0 lead but Sri Lanka equaled at 3-3. The islanders would then go on a 2-5 run to take a 3-point lead at 5-8. Asanka/Yapa held onto the lead until Cook/Brodzki equalized at 12-12. But, Sri Lanka again took the lead and made it 14-17 and went onto win the 2nd set 18-21.

In the deciding 3rd set the poor start was again evident with Sri Lanka. Scotland took a 4-point lead at 7-3. It seemed as if Scotland would have a comfortable win at 14-11, but a sudden resurgence in energy saw Asanka and Yapa go on a 0-3 run to make it 14 all.

However, the momentum swing went away as fast as it came. Scotland clinched the next two points to wrap up the set and the match at 16-14.

Sri Lanka’s next match will be tomorrow (7th Apr) at 4.00pm (SL Time) against world ranked 14th Samuel Pedlow and Sam Schachter of Canada.
